Looking back on 10 years of life in Madrid

Have you noticed that suddenly everything around town is suddenly a “gastro” bar or some vintagey hipster café?

Or even worse, a low-cost bar with the bucket of botellines and the plate of patatas bravas for 6 euros.

I’ve certainly noticed. And as one of the most old-school guys around here, I’ve written a new article about it, and about my 10 years in Spain:

Check it out — Gastro-this and hipster-that: lost in the new Madrid. I think it’s pretty good, but that (of course) is mostly for the reader to decide.

el molar little pic

Looking forward? Looking back? Or just looking around with a dazed expression, wondering how I got here? El Molar, Comunidad de Madrid.

You know what? It’s easier for me to write a 1600-word article than it is for me to write a headline for that article. And an extract referencing myself in 3rd person? Oh damn that’s exhausting.

“Mr Chorizo isn’t quite sure how Mr Chorizo feels about this whole living abroad thing. But it’s certain that Mr Chorizo’s life is passing, like anyone else’s. And so, Mr Chorizo wrote an article about it, etc.”

And you know something else? Now that the weather is colder and we’re talking about how remarkably old school I am, it’s time to talk about tripe! You may not know it yet, but you probably need to eat some callos. In fact, it’s officially el mes de los callos here in Madrid.

I’m apparently the only person under 60 who actually likes them, but just trust me on this one. Callos con garbanzos, with some red chilies. Thank me later. They’re one of the most typical foods in Madrid.

Mr Chorizo.

P.S. Does gastro bar just sound terrible to anyone else? Or am I the only one who associates a gastro- prefix with explosive diarrhoea?

How did I end up in Spain? Why am I still here almost 20 years later? Excellent questions. With no good answer... Anyway, at some point I became a blogger, bestselling author and contributor to Lonely Planet. So there's that. Drop me a line, I'm happy to hear from you.
