Today I had two new students.

1) An architect who was working on a project for a university in Tripoli, until NATO invaded Libya and they evacuated everybody. So now he’s back in Spain, unemployed, and trying to avoid going to Azerbaijan, where his company wants to send him now.

2) An MBA student from Inner Mongolia. Inner fucking Mongolia! That’s not even Mongolia, it’s a region of China. Who even knew?

I love having such diverse people in my classes. I am, truly, the king of teachers. All other teachers are just imitations.

Damn it feels good to be an ESL gangsta.

P.S. Update, 2023: Many years later, I’m laughing at this optimism. Contrast this article, if you will, with the much more recent Is teaching English in Spain for losers? A lot’s happened since I published this one back in 2011.

About the Author Daniel

How did I end up in Spain? Why am I still here almost 20 years later? Excellent questions. With no good answer... Anyway, at some point I became a blogger, bestselling author and contributor to Lonely Planet. So there's that. Drop me a line, I'm happy to hear from you.
