My Downstaris Neighbor is the Next James Joyce
She’s about 85 years old and occasionally she hits me with these Abraham Simpson-style stream-of- consciousness rants.
“You young people should work all you can now because with these hard times you never know… Just like I say to my family… My grandson Manuel, who’s the owner of my dog, he’s a veterinarian, and these days he’s spending the mornings studying in Aranjuez, he says in two years his degree will be validated, I don’t know, I don’t really understand these things and in the afternoons he’s in San Fernando working, he’s 25 years old and he lives alone because his mother, you remember, my daughter Isabel, fixed up the house, it’s one of those old houses, but new inside, you know, up where they sell newspapers and things, a little ways up the street. The dog, Mike, is actually his, but when he moved out and his mother moved out the dog didn’t want to move, so he stayed with me… and since Manuel is 25 he doesn’t have anything else to do, he has to start working already…”
